Pennington, Blomster Dominate Roadrunners in Doubleheader Sweep

DENVER – Walter Pennington pitched his first complete game of the year and Tyler Blomster improved to 2-0 as the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team took both games from MSU Denver in Saturday's doubleheader, 4-2 and 11-1.

Pennington (3-1) took game one behind 7.0 innings of work, surrendering two runs (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts. He also came in as a pinch hitter and came around to score after drawing a walk. Blomster (2-0) made his second start of the year in game two and dominated MSU Denver (9-15, 5-6 RMAC) with 6.0 innings of one-run, two-hit baseball while striking out seven. Sam Slusser also provided one inning of perfect relief as the Orediggers (16-5, 9-2 RMAC) used just three pitchers in 14 innings.

At the plate, Pennington finished the day 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI while slugging 1.250. Daniel Ciraula also came up big with three hits in two games, scoring once and driving in three. Trevor Kehe led the team with four runs and finished with a pair of hits. Colton Wardle hit his second home run of the season as well.

Game One – Mines 4, MSU Denver 2
It was the Roadrunners who struck first in game one, plating one unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. However, the Orediggers struck back in the top of the fourth inning with two runs thanks to a series of MSU Denver miscues and a John Howard single to make it 2-1, Mines.

MSU Denver tied the game with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning and both teams worked a scoreless fifth frame to keep it 2-2. Joe Popp led off the sixth inning with a single and Pennington was granted an intentional walk. Ciraula provided timely hitting with double down the left-field line to give Mines a 4-2 lead.

Pennington came back out to the mound and finished out the complete game in dominant fashion. In the final two innings, the sophomore gave up no runs on one hit with three strikeouts.

Game Two – Mines 11, MSU Denver 1
Wardle set the tone in game two as he led it off with a home run down the left-field line. Blomster carried that momentum into his opening frame as he recorded all three outs with strikeouts.

MSU Denver tied it in the bottom of the second, but that would be all for the Roadrunners. Mines scored three in the third, two in the fifth and four in the sixth. A luxury run in the seventh capped the scoring as the Orediggers cruised to victory.
