GOLDEN, Colo. – Mikey Gangwish became Mines' single-season record holder for home runs and RBI Sunday as the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team swept its doubleheader with Colorado Christian 10-7 and 13-3 while clinching a spot in the 2018 RMAC Baseball Tournament.
Gangwish hit two home runs in game one, going 3-for-4 while scoring three runs with five RBI and a double. His first home run was a grand slam to tie Mines' single-season home run record. It also gave him the program's single-season RBI record, surpassing Terry Packer's 57 RBI from 2002. The catcher's second bomb of the game broke the previous mark of 16 dingers, set by Adam Marwitz in 2004. Gangwish closed the day batting .600 and slugging 2.000.
Jace Selsor,
Trevor Kehe,
Daniel Ciraula and
Colton Wardle all batted .400 or better on the day as well. Selsor hit his sixth home run of the season and finished with four runs and three RBI in the doubleheader.
Caleb Thomas also mashed a tater for the Orediggers, his second of the season.
On the mound,
Jake Englehart (3-0) got the start for Mines in game one and
Owen Pigati (1-0) took the bump in game two. Both starters earned wins and
Gabe Garvens came out of the bullpen in game one for his third save of the season.
Nick Gardner and
Mitch Menard also appeared in relief for the Orediggers. Scotty Wright (3-3) and Bayley Chesterton (3-5) took the losses for CCU.
Game One – Mines 10, CCU 7
Colorado Christian (16-22, 11-17 RMAC) struck first with a solo home run in the opening frame. Selsor responded for Mines in the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff home run to left-center field to make it 1-1.
A scoreless second inning led to Gangwish's grand slam in the bottom of the third. However, the Cougars weren't done yet, scoring one run in the top of the fourth frame.
Gangwish's second home run of the game sparked a three-run fifth inning. The runs proved much needed as CCU plated five in the top of the sixth to make it 8-7.
Derek Daly clinched the win with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth.
Game Two – Mines 13, CCU 3
Mines carried its momentum on offense into game two, putting up five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Pigati fed off the fire as he carried a one-hitter into the sixth inning. The Cougars broke up the shutout with two runs in the sixth inning, but it would not be enough.
Thomas's tank in the sixth capped the scoring for the Orediggers. Menard tossed a one-hit, one-run seventh to clinch the win.
