Weyer Powers Mines with Complete-Game Victory

PUEBLO, Colo. – Oredigger pitcher Brayden Weyer tossed a complete game on Sunday afternoon and gave the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team its first win of the season in a 9-5 decision over CSU Pueblo at Rawlings Field.

Weyer's (1-0) nine inning performance resulted in five runs (two earned) on eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks on 120 pitches. His support on offense came primarily off the bat of Danny McDermott who went 2-for-5 with one run and three RBI thanks to a double. Toby Scoles and Caden Bonds both scored twice. Noah Kuzma, Luke Folsom, Adam Houghtaling and I-Ly Hsue recorded RBI as well while Houghtaling produced a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Alex Bumpus, Wayne Moeck, Kuzma and Folsom also came across the plate in the victory.

Mines (1-11, 1-11 RMAC) scored its nine runs on nine hits which resulted in a team batting average of .257. The Orediggers also overcame four errors in the field to earn the win. CSU Pueblo (6-10, 4-8 RMAC) suffered from five errors in the field that made two of Mines' runs unearned. The ThunderWolves eight hits came in 33 at-bats for a .242 batting average. CSU Pueblo used five pitchers in the loss as starter Matt Goytia (0-3) took the decision.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines set the tone from the word go on Sunday afternoon. Weyer shrugged off a walk in the opening frame and put up a zero in the top half of the inning. The Oredigger offense grabbed that momentum and exploded for six runs on two hits. Bumpus led off as a hit batter followed by consecutive walks to Scoles and Moeck. Kuzma delivered a bases-loaded single to make it 1-0. Another hit batter made the score 2-0 and kept the bases loaded. That led to McDermott's two-run double and a 4-0 advantage for Mines. One more ground ball and a CSU Pueblo fielding error plated two additional runs and rounded out the Orediggers' 6-0 lead.

The ThunderWolves eliminated Mines' shutout hopes in the top of the second inning by scoring an unearned run off an Oredigger error. However, Weyer and Mines' defense remained unfazed and worked together for a no-hit bid into the fourth inning. Meanwhile, McDermott delivered another RBI hit in the bottom of the second which scored Scoles and afforded the Orediggers a 7-1 lead. When CSU Pueblo canceled Mines' attempt at a no-hitter, they also scored another run and pulled within five runs of their guests at 7-2. Both teams dropped into a binary scoring pattern over the next four innings as Bonds scored in the fifth and seventh innings while "The Pack" plated runs in the sixth and eight innings. Those who can imagine an inning-by-inning scoreboard better understand the binary reference.

As the Sunday matinee rolled into the final frame, Weyer trotted out to the mound seeking a complete-game performance. Two pitches made quick work of CSU Pueblo's first hitter thanks to a fly ball tracked down by Trevor Howard in right field. The second batter placed a bloop single into shallow center field. That led to a great play by Bumpus on the very next hitter. He made a long run into foul territory down the left-field line to notch out number two as the runner on first advanced to second base. Back-to-back singles resulted in a run for the ThunderWolves, but Weyer removed all doubt on his 120th pitch of the game. A bouncing ground ball back to the mound looked like trouble, but the redshirt junior knocked it down with his glove, picked it up and took two long strides towards first base before tossing it to Houghtaling for the final out.
