Orediggers, ThunderWolves Split Doubleheader

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team split its doubleheader with CSU Pueblo on Saturday by scores of 1-2 and 6-3 at Rawlings Field.

Among the Orediggers who played in both games, Mason Andrews and Toby Scoles boasted the top batting averages at .333. Wayne Moeck started both contests and hit .286 with two runs and one RBI on one home run. Also notable were Adam Houghtaling and Keene Tanaka both batting .667 while Houghtaling notched a double and a home run to slug 2.000 for the day. Caden Bonds, Luke Folsom, Hoghtaling and Tanaka all scored runs. Houghtaling and I-Ly Hsue collected two RBI apiece.

Mines' hurlers included game one starter Tyler Blomster, game two starter Kevin Zapanta, Blake Ripp and Zachary Kriethe. Blomster did not factor in the decision despite providing 6.0 innings of one-run, four-hit baseball with seven strikeouts compared to three walls. Ripp (2-2) took the loss in game one after 1.1 innings of one-run, two-hit relief. Zapanta (5-1) earned the victory in game two thanks to 5.0 innings of work featuring two runs (one earned) on six hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. Kriethe closed out the back end with 2.0 innings of one-run, two-hit relief.

Overall, Mines (15-8, 4-7 RMAC) overcame a team batting average of .250 to get the split. The Oredigger pitching staff helped the effort by limiting CSU Pueblo (15-10, 8-3 RMAC) to .255 at the plate. Game one was an extra-innings affair that finished with a ThunderWolves' walk off. In 15 innings, Mines committed just one error in the field that allowed two unearned runs for "The Pack." The home team committed two errors resulting in one unearned run for the Orediggers. In the same span, the pitching staffs for Mines and CSU Pueblo combined to strike out 36 batters while issuing 11 walks. The ThunderWolves' loss dropped them out of their tie for first place in the RMAC standings after Colorado Mesa swept its doubleheader with UCCS.

GAME ONE: CSU Pueblo 2, Mines 1 (Eight Innings)
The prescribed seven innings were not enough to handle the pitchers' duel that broke out in Saturday's front end. Blomster carried a two-hit shutout into the bottom of the sixth inning while striking out six batters along the way. CSU Pueblo limited its guests to Bonds' one run scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second as Jake Lombardelli fanned seven Orediggers in his effort. However, the difference came in the bottom of the sixth frame when "The Pack" scored one run on two hits to tie the game 1-1. Then, in the first extra frame, the ThunderWolves led off with a double and moved their runner over with a sacrifice. After two straight walks, CSU Pueblo walked it off with a single up the middle for the 2-1 win. Mines only managed five hits to hit .185 in the extra-innings affair and none went for extra bases. The ThunderWolves had six hits for a .230 average including two doubles.

GAME TWO: Mines 6, CSU Pueblo 3
After its anemic performance in game one, the Oredigger offense found life early and often in the late contest. In the very first inning, Folsom hit a two-out double and scored on a CSU Pueblo error thanks to a ball put in play by Danny McDermott. Mines added to its 1-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to Hsue's two-run single that scored Tanaka and Scoles to make it 3-0. Moeck pushed it to 4-0 in the fourth with his solo home run. Houghtaling capped the visitors' scoring in the top of the sixth by smacking a two-run home run with Moeck on base. Defensively, Zapanta guided the Orediggers through four shutout innings with six strikeouts. He struck out three more in the top of the fifth, but not before "The Pack" used a solo home run and a Mines error to get two runs back and make it 4-2. However, thanks to Houghtaling's insurance in the sixth, Pueblo's RBI-double off of Kriethe in the seventh didn't matter as he closed out the 6-3 victory.
