RMACs Day 4: Fruitful Friday Finals for Mines

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Friday's evening session featuring finals at the 2023 RMAC Swimming & Diving Championships proved extremely fruitful for the Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Swimming teams.
 
The final tally for the night featured 11 NCAA "B" times, 10 All-RMAC performances, seven medals, and three program records. Among the highlights were record-setting swims for the second time in one day by Kerrigan Hemp and Jordan Tierney.
 
The team standings featured the Oredigger women at #2 with 543 points. Mines' men closed the day #3 with 544 points. Colorado Mesa leads both team races thanks to 967 points for the women and 890 for the men. Oklahoma Christian's men own 625 points for #2 in that race.
 
The final day of the RMAC Championships is Saturday, and prelims in the 100-free, 200-back, 200-breast, with finals of the 1650-free as well start at 9 a.m. All action will stream live, and for free, on the RMAC Network.
 
500-Freestyle
Meghan Slowey led the way for Mines' women thanks to a NCAA "B" cut of 5:02.16 which led to a third-place finish, a bronze medal, and Second-Team All-RMAC distinction. Maggie Wells (5:10.31) put seven points towards the team score at #10. Isabella Bono (5:10.38) and Olivia Kisow (5:15.73) combined to score eight more points for the team.
 
Ronan Lauinger was tops for the men at #10 with another NCAA time, this one at 4:36.42. Michael Kietzman (4:39.23) and Scott Reeder (4:39.51) were right behind at #11 and #12, respectively, boasting their own NCAA "B" cuts. Andres Saa rounded out Orediggers in the field by adding another point towards the team score after finishing in 4:46.94.
 
100-Backstroke
Kerrigan Hemp struck again for the second time in less than a day. After breaking the program record in prelims, she posted a NCAA "B" cut of 56.11 to improve her own record while claiming RMAC bronze and Second-Team All-RMAC status. Emi Jedryka was also in the "A" finals and finished #8 in 58.50. The 100-back "B" finals saw Emma Neuroth tally three points at a pace of 59.44.
 
The men's 100-back saw Jakson Winn (49.26) and Seth Krause (49.79) rack up 25 points for the squad. Luca Burns (49.76) and Sam LaPrade chipped in nine more points from the "B" finals.
 
100-Breaststroke
Jordan Tierney also had a record-breaking swim in prelims. She, like Hemp, parlayed that into another program record in the finals. She churned out a NCAA "B" cut of 1:02.47 to reset her own Mines record. That also led to RMAC silver and First-Team All-RMAC distinction. Cameryn Schmidt and Claire Lautman rounded out the "A" finals at #6 and #8 with times of 1:04.52 and 1:06.05, respectively. Jorie Selig (1:07.13) and Ava Burger (1:07.73) afforded the Oredigger women eight more points from the "B" finals.
 
Garrett Waite added another NCAA "B" cut on the men's side thanks to his pace of 55.45 which proved good enough for #5. Gavin Gilmore (56.59) grabbed #6 and Gavin Moore (57.74) finished #8. Jack Engler (57.09) was the top finisher in the "B" final, contributing nine more points to the men's team total.
 
200-Butterfly
Savannah Karas earned Second-Team All-RMAC honors by finishing #4 in the 200-fly after touching in 2:09.74. Kylie VanderMeer was right there at #5 thanks to a time of 2:09.87. Twelve more points came from the arms of Sophia Buhr who finished #7 in 2:10.98 as Mines had all three swimmers in the "A" finals.
 
The medal count grew for the men thanks to Charles Burroughs who claimed RMAC silver on a NCAA "B" cut of 1:48.65. That also gave him First-Team All-RMAC distinction. Orediggers rounded out the rest of the All-RMAC honors as well, all with NCAA-qualifying times. Jaron O'Grady was #3 in 1:50.42. Joe Peak grabbed #4 at a pace of 1:50.85. Both were named Second-Team All-RMAC. Overall, the Oredigger men tallied 48 team points in the 200-fly.
 
200-Freestyle Relay
The final event of the night saw Annie Osmun, Jorie Selig, Cameryn Schmidt, and Jordan Tierney team up to break the program's 200-freestyle relay record. That quartet combined to touch the wall in 1:34.93 which bested the previous record of 1:35.45 set by Selig, Sarah Bennett, Olivia Lomax, and Maddie Finley in 2020-21. It also gave the four Orediggers RMAC silver and First-Team All-RMAC status. Mines' second relay featuring Emma Neuroth, Kerrigan Hemp, Meghan Slowey, and Olivia Kisow scored 12 team points by finishing #11 in 1:38.58.
 
Garrett Waite, Sam LaPrade, Seth Krause, and Jakson Winn brought home RMAC bronze on the men's side. They worked together and finished #3 in a time of 1:21.04. Then, Jack Engler, Braden Hunt, Gavin Gilmore, and Jake Sherman finished #11 in the same event at a pace of 1:25.53.
