GOLDEN, Colo. - Both games of Saturday's baseball doubleheader between Colorado School of Mines and Regis went to the Rangers by scores of 16-7 and 13-5.
Wayne Moeck was the top hitter for Mines (11-29, 6-17 RMAC). Across two games, he handled Regis (26-11, 16-3 RMAC) by batting .750 with three runs and one RBI.
Mason Andrews,
Canon Humphreys,
Evan Bilter, and
Jackson Babcock all hit .400, or better, in the doubleheader. Bilter and Humphreys both notched doubles while Andrews smacked a triple. Humphreys and
Tyler Hummel both scored twice. Babcock and Andrews collected three RBI apiece.
Grady Booth (0-6) and
Will Niles (1-4) both started on the mound for the Orediggers and took their respective losses. Niles struck out six and walked two in 5.2 innings of work. Booth was chased in the first. Relief action for Mines came from
Matthew Dobberthien,
Nicholas Spidel,
Cade Burghardt,
Casey Thibault,
Grant Reising, and
Ryan Semin. Mason Ashcraft (3-0) and Ryan Garcia (6-1) were the winning pitchers for the Rangers. Wyatt Zsidisin (1) added a three-inning save as well.
Both teams hit over .300. However, Mines' arms posted a combined ERA of 17.36 even with four fielding errors. The Regis pitching staff emerged with a 5.14 ERA. The Orediggers struck out 11 and walked 13. The Rangers struck out 12 and walked five. Eleven stolen bases for RU also burned the home team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis scored nine runs in the first inning of Saturday's doubleheader. The Rangers added two runs in the second and four in the third. Andrews' three-run triple in the third inning, and a three-run fourth inning helped Mines cut the deficit to single digits, but that was about it. Game two featured a quick, four-run advantage for the visitors. Singles from Babcock and Bilter fueled a three-run second and kept the Orediggers close. Two runs for RU in the third an single runs for Mines in the third and fourth made the score 6-5, in favor of Regis, after four complete innings. Then, the Rangers stacked seven unanswered in the last two frames. That made the final tally and provided the visitors a series win going into Sunday's finale.
